I realized I was overdue for a personal care product recipe. The Environmental Working Group estimates that women put more than 500 chemicals on their body every day in the form of hair care, make up and other personal care products.
The good news is that many of these products are easy (and cheap!) to make at home.
I have been using homemade deodorant for more than a year now and love it. Note that this is a deodorant NOT an anti-antiperspirant. However, after a few months of using tI seemed to sweat less. Strange right? The recipe is adapted from Wellness Mama. It takes about 5 minutes to make and lasts for 2-3 months.
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1/4 cup arrowroot powder
- 8-10 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional) – I like mine fragrance-free
- Mix baking soda and arrowroot together in a medium sized bowl.
- Soften coconut oil and add to dry ingredients. Mix well.
- Add oils if desired.
- Store in small glass jar or old deodorant container for easy use.
Note: Some people find that their skin is irritated by the baking soda. If redness occurs you can simply leave it out and double the arrowroot powder.
